General Dancer & Parent Guidelines for Lessons
* Please be ready for class at the scheduled time. If this means arriving a bit early to change clothes, fix hair, eat a quick snack, or use restroom, please do so.
* Please make sure your dancer does not come to class hungry. Bottled water or sports drinks only are allowed in the studio during lessons.
* Parents of new students are welcome to observe in the studio during the 1st and 2nd lessons. After the 2nd lesson, please make yourselves comfortable in the waiting area (or feel free to run errands) during lesson time.
* Proper attire for Highland Dance students without ghillies (Highland Dance shoes) includes any combination of the following: close-fitting but comfortable t-shirt or tank top (and sports bra if needed); knee-length or shorter bike or athletic shorts, or stretch Capri pants or skort. No jeans of any kind, please! See me when you are ready to purchase shoes for your dancer.
* Proper attire for Highland Dance students with ghillies includes any combination of the above, but with light-colored knee-high socks worn with the dance shoes. Knee socks are important! Please remember to bring them to class
* Please allow your dancer plenty of time to develop his/her skills and to encourage practicing. This form of dance is great exercise and lots of fun, but it takes time to learn to do it well, and every dancer brings different abilities to the classroom.
* After learning a new movement or dance, students should practice it enough so that it can be reviewed and refined (not relearned!) at a later lesson. Parents are encouraged to help children practice. One of the best ways to do this (especially with younger dancers) is to ask your dancer to teach you what she has learned that week.
* Please let your dancer know you are proud of his/her effort regardless of the outcome of a given lesson or event.
* Students old enough to take notes should bring a notebook and pencil or pen to class each week. Returning students were given notebooks or folders last year; please have them bring these.
* Recitals/Performances/Demonstrations: Students are expected to participate in these activities. During recital week there will be at least one dress rehearsal. Parents are expected to help with various aspects of putting on the recital, so please watch for a sign-up sheet to be posted on the bulletin board in the week or two prior to a recital.
* Please notify the instructor or Vivace by email or phone if your dancer will be absent from lessons. If classes in Harbor Springs are cancelled due to weather, Vivace will be closed. These lessons are not made up, but if the instructor cancels a lesson, a make-up lesson will be offered. One make-up lesson is scheduled into every session on the day your student’s lesson is scheduled.
* If you have questions about anything in this packet, please email the instructor at hdancenorth@sbcglobal.net or call me at 231.838.9477.
